"When I approach an architectural problem," Finnish architect and interior designer Eero Saarinen once said, "I try to think out the real significance of it. What is its essence and how can the total structure capture that essence?" Fellow designer Florence Knoll put forth the challenge of creating "a chair she could curl up in." The Womb chair was Saarinen's response to that question—a unique piece of furniture that will surely be the center of attention, wherever it is placed in your home.
The Design
The Womb chair, with its matching ottoman, was designed in 1948, part of Saarinen's breakthrough seating collection. The Womb's steel rod base and polished-chrome finish, combined with its frame upholstered in fabric—all covering a fiberglass shell, highlights Saarinen'
s brilliant design aesthetic and his architectural skills. In addition to its unique look, the chair is quite comfortable. Called the Womb for a reason, the chair is designed to facilitate a relaxed sitting posture which in turn provides total comfort and a sense of security.
