Introduced in the early 1950s, Eames Desk and Storage Units helped establish an exciting new residential furniture look. Today, they remain perfectly at home in the contemporary office, making them fantastic complements to the sophisticated modern Aeron Chair and Ardea Light.

Ensemble Pieces

• Introduced in 1950 and 1952, respectively, the Eames Storage Units and Desk Unit demonstrate the knack Charles and Ray Eames had for using industrial production techniques to extend the boundaries of design and create a whole new look. A result of work they had done for a 1949 exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts, these pieces reveal the “machine aesthetic” and Japanese influences important to the Eameses at the time.



• The incomparable Aeron Chair was not built on the success of a prior design but rather around a set of principles. These principles included ergonomics, that a chair should actively intercede for the health of the person who sits in it, function, that it ought to move and adjust as simply and naturally as possible, anthropometrics, that it should really fit and adjust to a person of any size, and that for the environment, it should be sparing of natural resources, be easy to disassemble and recycle, be made largely of recycled materials, and most of all, be built to last. The wild success of the Aeron Chair can be attributed to designer Don Chadwick's and Bill Stumpf's adherence to these principles.



• The aesthetic design of the Ardea Personal Light is driven by performance. Ardea’s movement and flexibility are integrated within its form and use of materials. The aluminum extrusion is twisted in a new, innovative, manufacturing process, giving it additional structural ability and creating a unique aesthetic.
